Turf Tips

Mowing - St. Augustine should be mowed between 3" to 4". Bermuda grass can be mowed at 1/2" for hybrids to 1-1/2" for common Bermuda. Scalping injures the turf, making it susceptible to disease and insect damage.

Irrigation - Most turf problems are the result of improper watering. Too much water results in fungus and weed activity. Not enough water may cause turf decline.

St. Johns River Water Management District's Irrigation Guidelines

  • Active growing season (March to November)- water once or twice a week at 1/2" to 3/4" per watering.
  • Dormant season (December to February) - water once every 7 to 14 days at 1/2" to 3/4" per watering.
  • Water as needed - no need to irrigate within 7 days of previous significant rainfall.
  • Irrigate in the early am before the sun rises.
  • Periodically inspect for proper operation and coverage.

Plant According To Site Conditions - Turf should be selected for and planted according to site conditions, including soil moisture, soil fertility, and amount of sunlight.
